WHAT IS A SECTION 75 NOTICE?

A Section 75 notice is a document given to a customer notifying them of a water leak from Severn Trent Water. Customers have a certain number of days to resolve this type of issue. This notice is often the first instance when a customer becomes aware they have a water leak on their premises. 

If you have received a Section 75 regarding a water leak within your property boundary, it is your responsibility to carry out repairs. As this is a type of enforcement notice, you must take prompt action to avoid any escalating costs and issues. It’s important to respond within the allocated time frame to ensure that you do not face any penalties. As a Severn Trent approved contractor, we are qualified to repair water leaks relating to a Section 75 notice.

SECTION 75 – WATER INDUSTRY ACT 1991

As 80% of leaks go undetected, Section 75 under the Water Industry Act 1991 highlights the importance of taking immediate action. These regulations relate to any water-use equipment within a property boundary that is connected to the public supply provided by a water company. Certain pipework and equipment may fall outside of a water company’s jurisdiction, which is why the cost of a Section 75 repair falls to the property owner. 

A Section 75 notice will state a tight timeframe, usually 7 days, to rectify the issue, although the full process often takes 30 days. This enforcement letter will include details on the quantity of lost water, creating the perception of a significant problem even with a small leak. But the risk could extend beyond water loss to potential property damage. A moderate leak of 500 litres per hour costs £2.50 every 2 hours, accumulating to £30 per day over 6 months.
